They therefore gave my sister, Padmini and me an extensive training in vocal music. Our first teacher was Ramaswamy Bhagawathar who taught us for three years. Our next teacher was the famous Mayavaram Krishna Iyer ( who also taught M.S.Subbulakshmi).He taught us for 5 to 6 years. In between we were very fortunate to have the great Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer teach us for the rest of the years we learnt music. Maharajapuram was more than a teacher for us; he was like a family member. We also had the privilege of learning a few songs from Musiri Subramania Iyer." The PadmaBhushan title was later conferred on Maharajapuram. Click HERE to see the autograph Musiri gave Hema. Incidentally, Musiri Subramania Iyer also taught Hema's mother and was also a musician friend and mentor of M.S.
